Our Board Member, Marcia Bristow brought me a hand shaped, ceramic bowl made especially for the “Soup Supper” fundraiser on March 13th that benefited Hunger Free Vermont. The children molded 75 bowls and hand painted them with colorful glazes, each one a unique creation. The children then welcomed their community to enjoy homemade soups served in the bowls along with bread and ice cream sundaes. Dinner was free and children collected donations for Hunger Free Vermont raising more than $700 for our organization.

Thank you to the children of the Charlotte Congressional Church for this wonderful fundraiser. You are special kids, and I really love my bowl!

Photograph from Shelburne News

International Human Rights Day

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wJVdQv0oz3E/TQFTi6tZzcI/AAAAAAAAAMg/g-FbQ2OI6ts/s320/Fist%2Band%2BSpoon%2BImage.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548808075237510594" />
Today is International Human Rights Day which marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Noted in Article 25 of the declaration is “the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food…”

This month is a time of celebration for many families across our state. However, too many Vermonters don’t have the means to put meals on the table to gather with friends, family, and neighbors. Food insecurity has been on the rise in our state for the last few years. Having limited or no access to nutritious food is not a standard of living and it is not a life choice. It is a violation of human rights.

Vermont’s state motto is Freedom & Unity. Nothing makes a person freer than being able to feed themselves and their families. The health and well-being of Vermonters are directly linked to the food they eat and have access too on a daily basis. Limited access to food and the low-food security statistics are keeping Vermonters from living our state motto to their fullest potential. We can do better.

Our organization’s belief statements best articulate our vision for a hunger free Vermont:

• We believe everyone has the right to food to sustain an active and healthy life and that the source of that food is consistent and reliable.
• We believe everyone has the right to choose a diet that is nutritious, varied, and culturally appropriate.
• We believe everyone has the right to food access through dignified means and traditional channels.
• We believe everyone has the right to sufficient knowledge regarding good nutrition and cooking skills, to sustain them throughout their lives.
• We believe in social sustainability: access to nutritious, affordable food is built in to the fabric of all communities.
• We believe children need quality food and nutrition education to reach their full potential.

Thank you for standing with us to live these beliefs everyday on behalf of the 1 in 7 Vermont households who struggle with food security in Vermont. Together we can ensure that every Vermonter has the right to be healthy and hunger free.

3SquaresVT Challenge Completed

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 3SquaresVT Challenge last week as part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. There were over 70 participants, including DCF Commissioner Steve Dale, who took on the challenge to live on the average 3SquaresVT (formerly food stamps) budget—approximately $1.80 per meal. It seems that we all learned something about the barriers to participation and the tremendous amount of planning and resourcefulness required to eat well on a budget. All of us at the Campaign thank you for taking part in this awareness effort and our hope is that you will continue to raise awareness and advocate for food insecure Vermonters in your community. Encourage local physicians and other medical providers to ask their patients about food insecurity and to provide information and referrals to food resources.

Day 3 of 3SquaresVT Challenge

1 in 7 Vermonters receive 3SquaresVT benefits and live this “Challenge” every day. The program makes a difference in the lives of thousands of Vermonters every day, but in many cases, the benefits are too low to allow households to purchase nutritious food and feed their families healthy meals on a consistent basis. The 3SquaresVT Challenge seeks to highlight what it is like to eat on the average 3SquaresVT benefit — approximately $1.80 per meal.

Register for the challenge and check back here in November to comment on my blog about your experience.

Lamoille Valley Hunger Council Kicks Off

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 116px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_wJVdQv0oz3E/TKXtUv_JJ9I/AAAAAAAAAMI/yMaRMgYtDaw/s320/Lamoille+Valley+Hunger+Council+1st+Meeting.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523081458774255570" />
Back in 2006, we developed the Hunger Council model through our partnership with Northfield Savings Bank. The Councils in Washington and Chittenden Counties have made great strides in reducing hunger in their regions and are still going strong. Based on the success of these other groups, we are thrilled to start a Hunger Council to serve the Lamoille Valley.

This past Thursday, September 30th, was the inaugural meeting of the Lamoille Valley Hunger Council. The group includes several dozen community leaders from organizations such as the Lamoille Family Center, CVCAC, Laraway Youth and Family Services, the Department of Health, Meals on Wheels, and Johnson State College. This Council will be co-chaired by Scott Johnson, Director of the Lamoille Family Center, and Susan Bartlett, former State Senator.

The reason for this meeting – and for the new Council in general – is the fact that hunger is on the rise in the Lamoille Valley. As Dorigen Keeney from the Campaign explained, 1 in 6 children in the Valley are hungry. Despite the hard work and dedication of the folks on the Council, there is still work to be done to make sure everyone in the area has access to adequate nutrition. That will be the mission of this Council for the coming years: to understand what barriers local citizens face when trying to provide for themselves and their families, what programs or policies need to be created or improved, and how we can all work together to make these changed happen. Stay tuned!

What Vermonters Will Lose

Last Thursday, the US Senate passed a $14 billion cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps, called 3SquaresVT in Vermont) in order to pay for two major bills, including a state fiscal aid bill aimed at saving the jobs of an estimated 300,00 public employees, and the Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, a bill designed to fund and authorize programs such as school meals for the next five years. However, both bills cut SNAP benefits in order to pay for implementation. The Hunger Free Kids Act does provide some modest gains for child nutrition programs, but all of us at the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger are deeply disappointed to see cuts to another vital nutrition program to pay for these improvements. The benefit cut, scheduled to go into effect as early as 2013, is worth roughly $50 for a family of three.

I decided to investigate what this $50 cut would mean for a Vermont family. On Monday, I went to a local grocery store with my colleague Rebecca O'Reilly. Check out the video below to see what we found:

Anti-hunger advocates are now urging the House of Representatives to find an alternative source of funding for Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010. CEO of the Rhode Island Foodbank, Andrew Schiff shared with us their new Nothing campaign. This campaign is designed to help everyone understand what it feels like to go hungry. They created empty cans of Nothing that you can buy with other canned foods in the grocery store. These empty cans are more than just a symbol. Purchasing a can of Nothing supports the Rhode Island Foodbank. They also hosted taste tests of Nothing around Rhode Island. This dynamic and thoughtful campaign made a big impact on us all, and I'm so proud of Nothing!

The new and improved VermontFoodHelp.com

We are delighted to announce that www.vermontfoodhelp.com, a 3SquaresVT information site for Vermonters, just received a new look! The revised website incorporates the new program name (the most creative name in the country in our opinion) and the new branding of 3SquaresVT. Much of the information is the same, but the navigation has changed to make it easier for Vermonters to find what they need. Thank you to the Department of Children and Families and all of the community partners that provided input on the design of the new site. Nye spent almost five years traveling the US collecting experiences of hunger. This exhibition is a powerful collection of photos and stories. Each one will take your breath away.

The Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger will be co-hosting the exhibition with our friends at the Vermont Foodbank. Lisa has traveled the country to see first hand the successes and challenges of implementing the federal nutrition programs. We are so lucky to have Lisa working to improve access to SNAP for everyone in the country. While in Vermont, Lisa had the chance to enjoy a nutritious (and delicious) lunch at Ferrisburgh School. Let's make 2010 a record year!

Quick Hunger Council Meeting Pics and Quotes

These pictures are from my iPhone so sorry about the quality. We had a great meeting with the Chittenden County Hunger Council yesterday. The hunger council model brings together community leaders three times a year to learn about hunger and share their ideas for solutions to the problem. Then VTCECH puts those solutions in to action! Here are my two favorite quotes from yesterday:

"Will you be my taste tester?" -Peter Carmoli sharing a strategy to encourage senior participation in Meals on Wheels

Congressman Welch, Senator Leahy, Secretary Vilsack, and Senator Sanders

On Saturday, Vermont’s anti-hunger leaders had the opportunity to meet with United States Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack and Vermont’s Congressional delegation at Senator Leahy’s office in Burlington. In our discussions, two key themes emerged:

Vermont has unique and special partnerships between the advocate community and the state administrators of the federal nutrition programs. We look for innovative solutions together with a shared vision for a hunger free world.

The federal nutrition programs need to be simpler and easier to use so more low-income families can access them.

I believe that the concerns of our communities were heard and taken seriously by the Secretary, Senator Leahy, Senator Sanders, and Congressman Welch. Senator Leahy said he will be working with Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) on proposed legislation that would lower the “area eligibility” test from 50% to 40%. This legislation would make it possible for an additional 67 towns in VT to operate “open” summer programs where all children in the town could access free meals in the summer. I was also delighted to hear about new initiatives such as Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food and other pilot programs for rural states.

This was an extraordinary opportunity to represent the needs of Vermonters to Secretary Vilsack who is dedicated to making sure everyone in our country has access to healthy and nutritious food. I’m also very thankful to our Senators and Congressman for actively supporting meaningful change to the federal nutrition programs in the upcoming Child Nutrition Reauthorization. I look forward to our future work together to meet President Obama’s goal of ending childhood hunger by 2015.

Edibles and Friends

I just wanted to thank our friends Bob Reese & Alison Hooper at Vermont Butter & Cheese for donating the proceeds of Saturday's cookbook sales to the Campaign. It's a 24/7, all-weather exhibit where local artists paint 35 life-like (and life-sized!) fiberglass cows. The cows will be displayed throughout the Burlington downtown and at local hot spots around the region. At the end of the season, the cows are put up for auction and a portion of the proceeds benefit the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger.

You can sponsor this moo-velous (sorry, couldn't help myself) event! Being a cow sponsor has many benefits for your organization. Check out the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce website for more information.

Below is the cow location map. Currently, only 34% of eligible seniors, age 60 and over, participate in 3SquaresVT. Seniors often have misinformation about the program or face added barriers to accessing it. It is so important that communities make an extra effort to reach out to seniors who might need help buying food and encourage them to apply for food assistance. I am very appreciative to my new OWL friends who are passionate about this issue and have committed to sharing information about 3SquaresVT in their community. What an amazing night! We have to shower thanks on our friends Caroline and Zeb from The Point who approached us with the idea and produced the whole show. Brett Dennen and his band donated their talent to raise $14,000 for the Campaign. There has been a flutter of activity at the Campaign this summer. On August 22nd we hosted a very successful event at the Topnotch Resort in Stowe. Thanks to Chef Mark Timms, over 250 people got to taste delectable dishes from chefs across Vermont and the U.S at the Rising Star Chef Food & Wine Show. All of the event proceeds were donated to the Campaign and we are tremendously grateful to Chef Mark and the staff at Topnotch for hosting this event on our behalf. It was beautiful weather and people all day long!

Next up we'll be hosting the ONE Woman Photography Project at our office as part of the South End Art Hop. Sarah Judd of Burlington College organized the project, and describes it as “a community photography project that documents the lives of women living, working, and learning in this unique and culturally diverse section of the city. We gave disposable cameras to 200 women of diverse economic and social backgrounds and asked them to take pictures of their daily lives in the Old North End. Our youngest participant was 10, and our oldest was 85." It is a powerful exhibit and we're proud to share it with the community. Please stop by on Friday or Saturday if you're in the neighborhood. There will be snacks from our Cooking for Life program and fun activities for kids.

My first Cooking for Life class

Last week I attended my first Cooking for Life class at the O'Brien Community Center in Winooski. Thirteen Bhutanese refugees participated in the class which was taught by students from New England Culinary Institute. Cooking for Life classes are designed to improve food security for families with limited budgets. The classes teach basic cooking skills using healthy, family-friendly recipes. Participants leave each class with groceries to practice making the recipes at home. Since arriving at the Campaign I've learned a lot from the Cooking for Life curriculum. My favorite recipe is the carrot bread! Currently, only 33% of eligible seniors are utilizing the program. Hunger among seniors is a critical issue and it is important for the state, our Congressional delegation, and all of our non-profit partners to be working on solutions. At the round table we shared some of the qualitative data we collected from senior focus groups we hosted around the state. We also heard presentations from Renee Richardson, State Nutrition Program Director; Dottie Rosenbaum, Senior Policy Analyst from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities; Maria Cimini, SNAP Outrach Coordinator from University of Rhode Island Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America; and our own Angela Smith-Dieng, 3SquaresVT Outreach & Policy Specialist at the Campaign. Our next steps will be to implement the group's recommendations which include an improved outreach plan and innovations to the 3SquaresVT program. Many thanks to our board member, Fran Stoddard who skillfully facilitated the meeting!

Understanding "Area Eligibility"

Currently, 29,000 kids in Vermont access free or reduced price meals during the school year and only 5,000 of those kids have access to meal programs in their communities during the summer. The 24,000 kids who don't have access to meals in the summer are at much higher risk of obesity and falling behind their peers when school is back in session.

There are two ways the Campaign is making a difference on this issue. First, we are working with communities to assure there are good quality summer programs for all kids that include nutrition programs. Second, Congress is preparing to take up child nutrition reauthorization this year. We are working with our Congressional delegation on improving the area eligibility threshold for open summer meal sites and free school meal programs from 50% to 40% of the federal poverty level, which would increase access to nutritious food for children. In Vermont, this change would affect over 60 school districts and 13,000 more kids would become eligible to access meals year round.

The map below gives a visual of what this change would mean for Vermont kids. The red areas on the map are currently eligible. If area eligibility was lowered to 40%, the blue areas could also become eligible.

Summer Food Kick Off

Friday, June 26th was the 2009 Summer Food Kick Off hosted by Burlington Parks & Recreation, Burlington School Systems, and the Campaign. Lisa Pino, Deputy Administrator of the nation's Food and Nutrition Program at the USDA attended along with Vermont Secretary of Human Services, Rob Hofman, Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss, and the Burlington Firefighters Association. After we ate our delicious lunches (all beef hot dogs, wheat rolls, and fresh Intervale fruits & veggies), the grown-ups headed to H.O. Wheeler School for a community round table with our USDA partners. It was a tremendously successful event! The Campaign and our partners had the opportunity to share our successes and challenges implementing the federal nutrition programs in our small, rural state. We welcomed many new faces to the table and celebrated the contributions of departing board members. This meeting was also the launch of our strategic planning process. Our wonderful consultant, Jim Lefevre took us through a "visioning" exercise for the whole board and staff. We wrote "achievements" on one side of an index card and "impact" on the other. Then we all shared our hopes and dreams for the impact and achievements of the Campaign as if we were waking up on the morning of January 1, 2015. I spread all the cards out on my desk after the meeting to take it all in. The common threads among the cards are quite remarkable, my favorite being Vermont becomes a leader and model for ending hunger.

Many thanks to the wonderful people at Allscripts who let us use their conference space! During the academic year, 29,000 Vermont children rely on free or reduced priced meals. When the school doors close in June, many children lose their most reliable source of consistent and balanced nutrition. The Campaign works with over 50 organizations, municipalities, and schools to provide healthful meals to over 5,600 Vermont kids at approximately 150 summer food sites statewide to help fill this gap. This month we hosted meetings in both counties to plan out the future work of the councils. Each council identified areas that need discussion, action, and community support. We'll be working with our council co-chairs over the summer to lay out the next year's discussions and plans. Both councils also agreed to participate in "World Cafe" discussions as part of the Campaign's strategic planning process launching June 10th. We are very lucky to have such dedicated, caring, and connected volunteers investing their time and energy in these critical issues.

At the Chittenden Countil Hunger Council meeting, May 19th

Recording ideas for future work with our small group.

Three more years!

We are delighted to announce that Northfield Savings Bank will continue its generous support of the Campaign's work for the next three years! John Sayles, the new CEO at VFB and I agreed that as new executives renewing and deepening the partnership between our two organizations is essential to ending hunger in Vermont. We started on this path by hosting a "Get to Know the Campaign" presentation at our office for John, Julie-Ann Graves, and Chris Foster. In the coming months I'll head to VFB with Campaign staff to learn more about VFB's core services. In the future we hope to identify more areas where the two organizations can come together towards our common mission. It was a wonderful meeting and I am so excited for the future of our partnership!

(From left to right) Julie-Ann Graves, CFO at VFB, John Sayles, CEO at VFB,

and Marissa Parisi, Executive Director at VTCECH

Sarah Kunz, Nutrition Program & Policy Specialist at VTCECH

(From left to right) Joanne Heidkamp, Program Manager at VTCECH, and

Chris Foster, Chief Development Officer at VFB

First 100 Days

Some of the Campaign staff at the Vermont State House

Hunger Awareness Day

February 12th, 2009

Wednesday marked my 100th day as Executive Director at that the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger. As I’ve become more grounded in the needs of our organization and Vermont communities I’ve begun taking steps to create long-term plans for our organizational growth and development. Going forward we must continually rise to meet the needs of Vermonters so that hunger becomes a distant memory. No small task.

The staff at the Campaign always has our mission in their sights. They spend hours understanding how income changes will affect families’ 3SquaresVT benefits. They help schools with lengthy federal applications for meal programs. They’re on site when schools reapply for summer programs with another lengthy application and different reimbursement formulas. They work with schools on balancing budgets to afford locally-grown fruits and vegetables for snack time. Without our dedicated staff very little of this vital work would happen, and there is always more to do.

Currently 3SquaresVT (formerly known as Food Stamps) has the highest participation rate the state of Vermont has ever seen -70,000+ participants. Children who eat meals in school or in a child care setting get 500+ nutritious meals a year. Our work enhances the well-being of Vermont’s children and their families.

With more than 60,000 families in Vermont still experiencing food insecurity there is a great deal of work ahead of us. I believe the Campaign has the right people at the right time to find sustainable solutions to hunger. I look forward to working with our advocates, donors, partners, and friends to make change!
