1 in 7 Vermonters receive 3SquaresVT benefits and live this “Challenge” every day. What choices are you making this week that may be helping you see hunger in Vermont from their perspective?
What You Can Do: Help strengthen 3SquaresVT so that Vermonters can get the nutrition they need all day and all month long. Lawmakers in Washington DC are considering cutting future 3SquaresVT benefits to pay for child nutrition programs, like school meals. Call Congress and the White House and ask them to strengthen, not cut, 3SquaresVT (called SNAP at the national level). Tell them it doesn’t make sense to pay for lunch by cutting money for dinner. Today was the first time I had to seriously decline a social meal. I was at a meeting where lunch was provided. While others shared in a yummy meal, I ate a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat and an apple. It was ok, but I felt the isolation of not taking part in the community meal, plus I got some funny looks, too. At least my non-participation prompted some interesting discussion. I learned about another family who had tried to do the Challenge but quit 3 days in because it was too hard. But they said it had really made them think in a new way. Another person talked about feeling guilty that she was eating the meal and I wasn't, and she kept offering to get me things. I'm hopeful that other folks doing the Challenge are also having some of these conversations with friends and family...
